Interview 85- Roxanne Proulx and Amélie Abraham: With Love

“We are limited only by our beliefs, trying hard to conceal the unlimited power that exists within each of us as a human being. We all bear this internal dialogue, a rivalry between our fear of failure and the desire to accomplish something greater than us.We need to observe ourselves in order to find out which power we nurture everyday, and then realize if the life we live daily is the one we were dreaming of as a child, before “taking a risk” became a pejorative term.”

Tell us about your company With LOVE and how you both got started.

We are both from Quebec city, a town in Canada. Last summer we were living in Brooklyn. As Amélie is a writer and Roxanne an entrepreneur in the beauty field, we are both very sensitive to our environment. New York’s energy is a mix of creativity, effervescence and ambition, three elements that are essential to pursue any dream. We both travel to New York often but this time, as we were together and because of the incredible talented people that we met there, we were completely inspired to create something new. Our community gives you a taste of that ”New York City vibe”, wherever you may be in the world. The acronym LOVE stands for Let Out the Velvet Energy. The velvet represents abundance and success. Our mission is to allow people to reach their full potential of success by following their passion and to live the life they’ve always dreamed! The way we make it happen is through interviews with people who represent a form of greatness to us and also articles where we share tips we found for achieving success.

Tell us a bit more about the message you are trying to share with your work

Our message is simply to follow your passion. We all have that one thing we’re passionate about and we can only be truly accomplished once we’ve allowed ourselves to dive into it.

Living authentically implies being completely fulfilled and the only way we can achieve this is by pushing our limits, our fears, our habits that drag us down at the bottom of ourselves, in order to live up to our greatest potential. We deeply believe the only reality that exists is the one we choose to accept. We are limited only by our beliefs, trying hard to conceal the unlimited power that exists within each of us as a human being. We all bear this internal dialogue, a rivalry between our fear of failure and the desire to accomplish something greater than us.We need to observe ourselves in order to find out which power we nurture everyday, and then realize if the life we live daily is the one we were dreaming of as a child, before “taking a risk” became a pejorative term.

Who has helped you in the process of following your dream?

A lot of people inspire us by being who they are, living their life with passion and by being unafraid of standing out of the crowd. It’s so important to have role models to follow your dream and this is why With LOVE exists, to share role models’ stories. This is basically the main reason why we are tracking greatness.

Roxanne: To me, it’s every woman entrepreneur who decided to hustle their way through the business field. For example, Lise Watier has inspired me a lot with her makeup company and her personality. The way she speaks about others and about herself is very empowering. She is a very creative and charismatic person but very humble soul too. I firmly believe that you need to master yourself -your mind- to achieve any kind of success in the world.

Amélie: A person who was a trigger is Gabrielle Bernstein. She has been named “a next-generation thought leader” by Oprah Winfrey and the New York Times. Gabby is a motivational speaker based in NYC and the message she shares resonated a lot with me the first time I listened to her. She works to empower people all over the world through her message of love and authentic accomplishment.

Where do you go for creative inspiration?

Roxanne: I go to places where creativity is everywhere like art galleries, coffee shops, music concerts & big cities. I also love to be in nature, the most creative place ever to my mind, or I try to meet passionate people to discuss everything!

Amélie: I listen to podcasts about human’s personal power, I listen to hip-hop music, I read books, I travel, I surround myself with people who have a passion and make it happen. Music has this huge power over me; the vibe that I get from it can make me want to change the world. Roxanne and I are very much the same regarding inspiration and we went a couple of times to this jazz place called The Way Station in Brooklyn and everytime we were thrilled with how the vibe made us creative.

What challenges have you encountered and how have you overcome them?

We are young women with this big dream but little contacts in the industry so we need to believe strongly in ourselves and even before any proof of success shows up! It takes a lot of courage to overcome you own doubts especially at the beginning because at that point you don’t have any certainty anything’s going to work. You need to believe in yourself more than anyone, because if you don’t, no one will. And then, how could you make anything come true?

In an industry where you can lose yourself in no time, how do you both stay connected with your sense of self?

We stay grounded by reminding ourselves why we do what we do and what kind of people we want to be. A lot of little daily rituals can help apply it like meditation, visualization, reading books about success stories. Also, the fact that we’re both together in this help us stay connected, as if one of us feels overwhelmed, the other one will help her stay grounded.

How do you deal with criticism?

Criticism will always be part of a project because it means we are doing something. We prefer doing something then doing nothing in order to avoid criticism. People who keep criticizing everything and everyone are not fulfilled and it’s sadder for them than it is for us! At the end of the day, we know we are doing something with our heart and that’s the important thing. If you don’t go for what your heart tells you, than you really are avoiding a call you’ll eventually have to answer. And criticism will still exist at that moment, it will forever be.

What is it that you love about your work?

We love the fact that at the end of the day, we maybe help someone to try something new or to inspire them to live of their own passion. Sometimes being an entrepreneur, an artist or doing any kind of unconventional work, can make us feel very lonely and not understood. When you realize that it’s ok to be different and there are in fact a lot of people who felt like you and see life like you do, it’s wonderful! Sometimes, this one difference a person holds will be the reason why he or she achieves greatness. We love that we get to meet amazing and inspiring people. Inspiration is one of the most important feelings we need to nourish and thanks to With LOVE, we get to share this vibe and stories in order to get people to become the most amazing version of themselves.

What advice would you both give to aspiring creative people?

#1- Surround yourself with creative and positive people!

#2- Believe you can do it.

#3- LOVE – love yourself, love your family, love your partner, love life, love people, love what you do, love everything that comes to you.

What have you learned in the process of following your dream?

It takes a lot of time! We need patience and we need to put in a lot of work that people can’t see, but it’s for a good cause that we believe in so it’s all worth it. Also, to do all this crazy work, you need to follow your passion. It’s the only way to be able to give it all, to be passionate.

Tell us about the With Love Foundation.

The mission of our foundation is to allow children from unprivileged backgrounds to live their passion and most of all, to find it. Having a passion is essential to a child’s happiness. Having a purpose, something that fascinates them and allows them to give a sense to their life, this inspiration can make a huge difference in the direction their life will take. We sell T-shirts where you write your passion on it – that one thing you do with love, determination and passion. You can take a picture of yourself, smiling as proud as you can and share your work of art with our hashtag #withlove and then you tag us!
Besides encouraging our foundation, which gives back a part of its profits to the cause, it also encourages people around you to follow their passion, to live a positive and creative life. Let us encourage each other to live an authentic life!

What are you both most excited for in the future?

We are very excited about our future projects. We have a lot of interviews with amazing people coming up and will be focusing on the foundation in order to give back more. We obviously we want to keep growing, keep meeting successful & creative people and we also want to launch our book soon!
