How did the nine of you come together to form Noteworthy?
Since 2004, Noteworthy has held auditions every school year on the campus of Brigham Young University. Alumni run the auditions, and after a rigorous callback, they always feel right about who should be in the group that year.
Who chooses the songs and styles to perform?
There are a few Noteworthy traditions that guide song choices and styles every year, but it is always the current group members who put their ideas together and vote on the repertoire.
Do you all have a favourite song to sing together?
This year, the group’s favorite song to sing together is a mashup of Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire” and Katy Perry’s “Firework.”
You have had some recent success, winning an International Championship and being featured on “The Sing-Off”. How did that feel?
The alumni who experienced winning at ICCA and performing on “The Sing-Off” were just so extremely grateful for those experiences, and so excited for how those events would shape Noteworthy’s future. The members of Noteworthy during those years worked extremely hard to achieve their big goals, and we know they were very excited and shocked to see them achieved so early in Noteworthy’s history.
Tell us about your recent CD, “Noteworthy Defined,” and where people can purchase it.
“Defined” is the third CD Noteworthy has produced, and features a wide variety of radio hits, even from Coldplay to Aretha Franklin. It also includes two original songs, written by Noteworthy ladies, and a special hymn. One song, “Backseat,” was featured on a BOCA (Best of Collegiate A Cappella) compilation CD. “Defined” received four Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award nominations, including Best Female Collegiate Album.
People can purchase the CD digitally through iTunes and Amazon.com, or can order a physical copy. All information is found at http://www.noteworthy9.com/music.
What does singing together mean to you all?
Singing together is always SOOO much fun! A huge part of being in Noteworthy is becoming a part of a sisterhood, and there really is hardly anything more fun and exciting than singing with your sisters and uplifting each other and others through the power of music.
What are your hopes for the future of Noteworthy?
Noteworthy hopes to not only continue for many years, but to always uphold and improve upon its reputation. Noteworthy really hopes to become a part of BYU’s school of music, travel internationally again, make more music videos, etc., in order to reach out to more people and hopefully uplift them through the power of Noteworthy’s music!
What advice would you give to singers looking to get into something similar?
Our biggest advice for preparing to be a part of a singing group, especially an a cappella group, is to sing a lot (all the time!), especially focusing on improving two things: your ability to blend and your strength as a solo singer.
